Friday Flowers

My little experiments with my new DSLR, a Nikon D3100, is proving rather rewarding. Of late, though ,I haven’t been doing much outdoor photography. Too cold to stay still outside for long!! And believe me, the basic trick behind getting a brilliant shot is to learn to stay still. With or without the tripod. And the patience to click the same frame over and over and over again till you get it right!

It isn’t about how expensive, fancy or ‘Just out latest research based edition’ your equipment is. When I had set out to buy my equipment a friend warned me, ‘ Don’t go by what’s currently the newest model. Decide what you want from it.’ I realised I wanted to experiment with compositions, mostly the play of light and shade and colours. There’ll hardly be many instances when I’d go for high speed photography or sports photography. And of course, my equipment is so loaded with features already that it will be a real challenge to actually explore it to the max.

So in spite of comments like ‘ D3100 is by now an old model’ I am quite happy…..

This composition is from the garden in our apartment complex. I remember the day I had taken this shot. It was early winter. We in Delhi who go through a harsh summer wait eagerly for the very distinctive signs that it’s time now to take out our warm woollens. The pleasant sun, the early morning chill, the fuzzy warm afternoons and the seasonal winter flowers. All these before the fog and chill sets in and we can’t wait for spring to come!!

This was one of our early winter flowers. I had probably taken at least 20 shots before I settled on this. Not that it’s perfect. Just that by then my knees were aching and my back was sprained from leaning at impossible angles!!! And even the pleasant chill gets to your bones after you’re out there crouching over a flower bed for nearly three quarters of an hour!!

I imagine this picture is a fit enough subject for TINA’S meme Weekend flowers # 83.

Oh the sacrifices one makes for the perfect picture. It was worth it though.

We need a high speed camera 'cause we're so fast.
