Senior Dog ?

Labrador Retriever (2)

Buddy turned eight last Thursday, that is on the 12th. That makes him a senior dog, or so they say.

That’s supposed to make him a wiser, quieter dog. A dog that who knows the rustling of leaves outside means just that..the wind rustling the leaves and not a squirrel. The door-bell ringing doesn’t mean the door will open itself instantly. One needn’t throw oneself at it and one can wait till someone else takes the trouble to check.

A walk means a slow, casual stroll enjoying the smells, the air and the company of your human. An older dog who has lived his youth and now likes to snooze away his time.

But whoever sets the rules for senior dogs to live by certainly has given Buddy the miss! Or may be he just doesn’t want to live by the ‘Senior Dog Rules’.

Not yet!!

Agreed. Buddy does love a good snooze but he is never lazy about getting up and checking on the important things in life. Like, for example, delicious smells that are wafting from the kitchen!!

Dog Adoption (2)

Though I, Shadow have willingly taken over the responsibility of checking on the rustling leaves, the noisy night-guard with his whistle, the birds on our balcony and the door bell, Buddy always double checks. Just in case!

Only he is now wise enough to know he needn’t always break his neck doing it!

He was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism some six months back. But after the initial set-back he hasn’t let that interfere with his life. He still is the most enthusiastic trekker and believes in the merits of an active life-style.  High places or thick vegetation, Buddy never lets any smell go unexplored or any squirrel un-chased!

He believes in warming his belly in the sun, dreaming of the good things in life, enjoying the soft grass, the smell of the earth or the plush cushions, whichever may be the case!!

And at the end of it all, one does notice that wise, quiet, all knowing softness in his eyes….

MUSIC and LYRICS

luggage blue

It is time.
We have started the process of packing to move to Delhi.
And from the looks of it, it is going to be quite a process!!
There are heaps of paper work, heaps of things to be packed and lots more to be disposed off .
The pictures below aptly illustrates the state Mummy and Daddy are in right now!!

We decided to take matters into our paws and arrange for some de-stressing time.

In our family, music is something we all turn to as a stress-buster.
You will always find something playing, irrespective of the hour you turn up at our home.

Now, if Daddy had his way, it would be Guns and Roses, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones or something as chaotic similar blasting away!
But fortunately, he doesn’t get his way!
In this matter, he is simply overruled by a vast majority!!
Therefore, at most times it is some soothing, old classical or soft Blue tones that emanates from our speakers!

We pups especially prefer ‘The Blues’. They never fail to lull us to a peaceful sleep in the midst of chaos and even fire-works outside!
And they seem to help Mummy’s migraines too.

Well, for the last two days Mummy has been rather tired and ‘headachey’.
We decided a serious music session was in order to help de-stress everyone.

You probably do not know but Ginger is quite a composer. She has these moments of deep deliberation and revelation, time and again.
She doesn’t like to be disturbed then and quite prefers to be left alone to her musings.

Daddy, of course, gladly puts music into her lyrics.

(That is off-tune, Daddy. Needs adjusting…)

(Yeah, That’s better!)

I, Buddy, have always been the lead vocalist while Shadow, very deftly edits and records all our efforts.

And Oh! You might be wondering where Mummy fits in.
Well, you do need an appreciative listener, don’t you?

Here is a sample of our recording session. Please tell us what you think of it.

A Special HARVEST FESTIVAL

P1140844

Today we celebrated a special Festival commemorating the winter solstice and the end of the Harvest season.

Yes, we know we are not farmers and we do not own any agricultural land but this doesn’t deter us from celebrating this special Harvest Festival which is associated with a great deal of feasting and festivities.

Know by different names in different parts of India, this festival is like an Annual ‘Thanksgiving’ Day.
Prayers and Thanks are offered for the full granaries, people exchange sweets and prepare special dishes to mark the occasion.
Children go from door to door, singing folk songs and are gifted sweets, savouries and sometimes money.

These collections are called ‘Lohri’ and hence, in the North Indian states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana, the festival is called ‘LOHRI’ or ‘LODI’.
Like most Indian festivals, there are many legends associated with this Harvest fest too. (You might want to read about them HERE)

In India’s North-East it is called ‘MAGH-BIHU or BHOGALI-BIHU’.
‘Magh’ is the Assamese month starting from mid-January while ‘Bhogali’ is the word derived from ‘Bhog’ meaning ‘A feast’!

The name is associated with the abundant feasting that is a part of this festival.
Traditionally, people stay up overnight, dancing and singing around a bonfire, feasting on special barbecued food.

In Western and parts of Southern India, it is called ‘Makar Sankranti’ while in the Tamil Nadu, it is called ‘Pongal’.

One special feature of this festival in the Western Indian State of Gujarat is the beautiful ‘KITE FESTIVAL’. It is almost a week long event and attracts people from all over the world.
The skies are dotted with exquisite creations which are truly lovely.

Some lovely kites are being sold all throughout this month, here in our city too.

We decided to have our own bonfire and barbecue last night on the terrace.
This will be our last ‘January Fest’ here before we move to Delhi and we decided to have fun on the terrace one last time.

Our plan was a rustic, traditional ‘Barbecue Night’, without the electric grill or the rotisserie, which meant Mummy and Daddy had to go to the woods to collect fire-wood and hunt down a bird or two.

P1140783

Or so we thought till we saw these pictures!

Ha! Not only did our chicken come out of a super-market shelf, Daddy bought our wood at this shop he found!

Our make-shift grilling board, though, was more in line with our ‘rustic’ plans!

We were a little doubtful initially, about the fire. The crackling noises disturbed us a bit.
And believe it or not, our Puppy brother turned out to be the bravest of us all!!

P1140807

He was the first to go upstairs to investigate the goings-on!! And then, he settled down with Mummy beside the fire.

I, Ginger, chose the Safest place- Daddy cushion!

Now, there isn’t such a thing invented or discovered yet that can keep Buddy away from yummy food.
And of course, the crackling fire was no exception!

We had a lovely time last night, and collected warm memories of our time in this home.

P1140897

Today morning, we all went to the rocks for our walk.

Now, we do believe that whatever happens actually happens for a good reason, however small or inconsequential.
I, Buddy, was complaining the other day about Mummy not finding the time to help me with my ‘Special Morning Walk’ post.
Good that that happened. Because, after our walk today morning, I have some nice photographs for you.
We will definitely post them in our next post.

Have a good weekend, Everybuddy
