TIME OUT!

Mummy brought home a bit of spring today. Tomorrow is Holi - a festival of colours which people celebrate by playing with powders that come is various shades of the rainbow and more.
So in addition to the colours all around us, we are going to wake up to a bit of our own spring out on the balcony. And oh!On the utility room shelf too which now has a strawberry plant in a planter. I thought strawberries only grew in colder climes but this planter proves me wrong.
Let's see if I can get it to give us fruits.

Sorry we haven't been around much. Have been trying to catch up on our reading a bit. Didn't someone say, 'Knowledge is everything'?

Well, I say ...

Well, must go sleep now. I'm too tired from taking care of Mummy and Buddy and all that reading and stuff. Both have the allergy sickies.
Whenever Mummy falls sick, Ginger just cuddles up to her and stays put while Daddy gets totally burned out from taking care of us, the house and work. So it's always I who have to take charge around here - chase away the birds, scare off the noisy creatures outside, get the door, the telephone and generally keep everyone's spirits up and try get them to play and laugh a bit. It certainly a tiring job.

So, for today, it's

Good night, Everypuppy. Or Good day - whichever is applicable in your corner of the world.

Earl, Mooch, Guard Dog and Shtinky

We love them to bits!

We love the way they make us smile every morning. We love how they make us realise how little acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s world. We laugh with them, we cry with them, we learn to be more compassionate and like Mooch says ‘we strive to find our inner purrr’ by understanding them and their words of wisdom.

Earl, Mooch, Guard Dog and Shtinky live in ‘MUTT COMICS’ – a lovely world created by Patrick McDonnell. Many of you might already know them but we came across them only a couple of months back and instantly fell in love with them. Even with Crabby, presumably ‘the world’s crabbiest crustacean who uses the saltiest crabby language’ !!

Earl is a very handsome mutt who, along with his feline friend Mooch has us totally hooked to his beautiful world.

cast80_earl  cast80_mooch

Our heart goes out to Guard dog and many more dogs like him who appear vicious and tough because they lead a tethered life but in reality have huge hearts that readily open wide with just a little love cast80_guarddog

Shtinky is extremely cute and this little orphan kitty has our hearts glued to him because of his passionate mission to save the tigers and almost the entire world in general!!

cast80_shtinky

We love Patrick’s world and everything that he is doing in real life to help animals . Wish there were more humans like him. The world certainly is a better place because of all the smiles he brings everyday to so many human, canine and feline faces.

Guess Mooch and Earl illustrate it so well here…..

There goes the Weekend...

SIGH!
Totally zonked from trying to catch up with everything we had been missing out on the entire week. One Sunday just isn't enough. Why can't we have a second Sunday, say around mid week?

Do you know of anyone we can write to who can make that happen?

Early morning tomorrow. Gotta go get some sleep. It's way past midnight and even that pesky cricket out there in the balcony has gone off to sleep

Zzzzz...

MUTT BOY

I am a mutt.

The Most fiercely loved, the Most deeply valued,  the Most warmly cuddled,  the Most handsome,  bravest, smartest and the most sensitive Mutt pup in the whole big world!

Mummy says our family picture is incomplete without me.

I love being me and I am in no mood to change my 'mutt' status anytime soon.

Well, make that 'ever'...

Signing off,
Shadow

Of charity,birthdays and life

Two insanely busy weeks, including two working Sundays. Yes, you read it right. Working Sundays! Mummy’s hospital organised free health camps on both the Sundays and whether you liked it or not, she had to go do some charity!

Whoever had said ‘Charity begins at home’ quite clearly forgot to pass on this message to those guys running her hospital. I mean, I don’t think there’s any point neglecting your family, especially on Sundays, to go do charity outside.

Thank Dogness, we have a superbly functioning Back-up App called ‘Daddy’ in place. Even though Mummy rushed off right after breakfast we got to go on our special Sunday walkie.

Lovely weather, a bright sun shinning through a clear blue sky and the most glorious smelling mud puddle left over from last week’s rains in a corner of our park. Unfortunately, Daddy got to me before I could delve in. Ginger was smarter. She’d sneaked out from the group without any fuss and had the most wonderful time. Before Daddy even noticed, she’d managed a mud bath.

What I’d have given to get into that thick mud caking her paws and face! But it wasn’t to be. Sigh!

I think Shadow is funny. He doesn’t like mud and he avoids all water puddles. He seems to take much pleasure in sniffing the flowers, chasing butterflies and trying to get at those pesky birds that tease us. If you ask me it is a sheer waste of time. I’d rather get into water any day.

Mummy turned 37 years old on the 28th of Feb. The cake arrived promptly at the stroke of midnight. We were all pretending to be terribly sleepy and snuggling under warm blankets when the door-bell chirped. Mummy immediately sat up and declared, ‘Hey! That’s my cake!’

It was a very pretty cake. Purple flowers that smelled of pineapple and vanilla! To my utter disappointment, just when we were half way through it Mummy declared she was gonna save the other half for the next day, to pack it for her friends at work. Thankfully by next morning she had come back to her senses so she only packed one fourth of it.

We got Mummy a brand new smart tablet and a pretty new notebook. All part of our plan to get her to help us blog seriously and more frequently. Hopefully once she gets the hang of it, she’ll make good use of her tablet and blog in between work.

Oh! I almost forgot.

Ginger went and caught a bug sometime back. Nopes! Not the big ones that you can chase and catch but the tiniature microscopic ones that chase you instead! She kept flapping her ears hard and had a fever. Mummy told me it was Otitis Media. Well, in English that translates to ‘a condition when your ears get infected due to a blockage of the ventilating tube behind the nose consequent to a cold’.

Thankfully, it wasn’t very bad. There wasn’t any discharge coming out of her ears which can happen if the ear drum perforates. The meds worked well and she’s all mended now. I feel so relieved.

For one, Mummy fusses terribly when one of us isn’t feeling hundred percent. And secondly, because she gets all paranoid we will all go catch bugs she doesn’t let us play in the puddles in our park.

For the record, Shadow hates puddles. So it’s actually I who end up losing out on all the fun.

Gotta go now.

Need to go help Mummy figure out the tablet.

Keep blogging and keep wagging,

Buddy

Smarter Weatherman?

It’s been raining since last Saturday. Not the heavy ‘uprooting trees and engulfing the whole world in darkness’ kind of rain but the perennial ‘no sign of stopping’ kind of rain which we think is worse.

Believe it or not this was how it looked today morning at 9:30 AM!

It’s mid-Feb, isn’t it? I mean isn’t February meant to be the beginning of spring? Whoever has heard of such thick fog in this season?

The other day when the Weatherman predicted rains starting this weekend and the return of fog, little did we think they will actually get it right. Oftentimes in the past it would invariably be sunny and bright when rains or fog were predicted. Naturally we expected the lovely weather from last week to continue the moment we read the predictions!

But Lo and Behold! It rains and turns all foggy and cold just when we were beginning to stow away our woollens!

Considering that there hasn’t been any news of the old weather scientists being fired or of any new smarter ones being hired, these guys must have acquired new, intelligent and obviously accurate machinery!

Hoping for Spring to come by,

The Parcel

I’d assumed all door bells were designed to go ‘Ding Dong’. But of late, every time someone’s at our door a bird chirps in an electronic voice that makes me think of Sir Stephan Hawkins.
I wonder if it has something to do with all that talk these days of the asteroid 2012 DA14 barely brushing past earth. The last time an asteroid had hit the earth all our dinos were wiped out so we must now make do with the ones in the ‘Ice-Age’ films.
Apparently, the scientists at NASA are pretty certain this particular one is going to miss our planet by a mere 17150 miles-the closest fly-past by an asteroid in history!! (Read about it HERE if you want to)

Anyway, the other day our electronic bird chirruped and there stood this small man at our door with a large parcel.
‘Should I come in and help you open it?’ he asked rather un-interestedly.
‘No, thanks. We like to open our own parcels’.

Flurry of activity – shoving, pulling, tilting and turning- and in came the parcel!
I was shocked out of my fur when out came a large, doleful yellow Labrador that looked exactly like Buddy, a giggling, silly lady that smelled like Mummy and a peppy black and white dog that was an exact replica of Shadow!!

P1080420

P1080430

For Dog’s sake, whatever for was anyone sending us more dogs and people? And exact replicas too, for that matter!
I, Ginger, who was an only dog – Mummy and Daddy’s super-spoiled darling princess have already so graciously made way for my two boisterous brothers. My toys are no longer my own; in fact many are no longer ‘alive’. There’s hardly any stretching space on our bed and we must make do with sleeping in a bunch.
Where will this lady and the dogs fit in?

I was almost sinking into a deep gloom when the lady giggled hard and hugged me tight.
‘Silly, Ginger! Don’t be sad now. Come and check what we got.’
Why, it was Mummy! And just Buddy and Shadow fooling around and not some new dogs!
Thank Dogness!

And Hey! We got a smart new Dryer!

P1080423

P1080435

P1080437

‘Look Shadow. Now we need not shiver in the cold after a bath for hours while we waited for our fur to dry up’.
‘But Ginger, Daddy always towel dries us and Mummy follows suit with her hair-dryer’, Shadow protested.
‘But it takes ages, doesn’t it?’ I said. ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get in there wet and come out dry?’

‘No, Ginger. You can’t get in there,’ Mummy sounded rather stern.
‘All three of you come with a No Tumble Dry instruction’.
I didn’t believe her for one bit. I mean, I haven’t ever seen any labels on any of us. But we were un-ceremoniously pulled away and the door firmly shut.

The clothes get in there wet and come out dry and fluffy while it is still the towel and the hair-dryer for us.
But at least there are no damp clothes hanging about in the balcony or the utility room. May be we should re-do that room, hang some pictures and brighten it up.
Hmmmm…..

Wags,
Ginger

JUMBO‘s Story

It is nearly 3 months now since Jumbo was born. I’ve seen him since he was just a tiny little fur ball that fitted perfectly in the palm of my hand. One in a litter of four puppies born in a corner of one of our neighbourhood parks, his batch was last out of the three that were born this season.

Four, in fact, but that batch didn’t survive. But that is another story for another time and it involves me in a big way.

Anyway, three of these late batches survived. There were fifteen of these tiny little souls running free in the park, unaware of the big bad world that was awaiting them. Each time I met them my heart broke into a thousand pieces. What was I to do? They were, at least most of them were destined to a life on the street. A few probably won’t survive the harsh winter ahead. Those who do will make the park their home and then when they realise that they need human contact for basic survival needs – food, water – they will walk out into the road, unaware of what a speeding car means…

They were still too small to be removed from the mother even if someone wanted to take them home. The shelters, already brimming to capacity can never take in three families. Besides, the chances of survival in a shelter go down drastically due to cross-infections from older dogs. All I could do was wish with all my heart that they somehow survive the harsh winter and wait for nature to take its course…

Shadow didn’t quite like the arrangement. I don’t know if he could somehow sense their discomfort but after each trip to the park, he came back rather upset. Seriously upset. Tail tucked in, eyes sad and forlorn my jovial puppy boy would just withdraw into himself and refuse to be happy. Ginger on the other hand indulged them, letting them jump all over her and act silly while Buddy quite enjoyed jumping around like a pup himself.

But it was obvious Shadow was very disturbed.

We just had to shift our walks to a new park.

The pups, in the meanwhile were growing. Lovelorn, but just so full of life, so heartbreakingly adorable…

I just kept wishing and hoping at least a few of them – those who were the friendliest- would find proper homes.

It was agonizing and at the same time amazing to see how fiercely the mothers protected their brood. Eleven chubby little bundles of fur, squeezed tight in a gap underneath a pile of bricks. Four more bundled together inside a large deep pit in another corner. Each mother would scoop her babies into one pile and sleep on top of them, shielding them from the rain, fog and the chilly winter breeze.

The way they gulped down whatever food was offered always made me guilty I didn’t bring them a little more. Or didn’t feed them daily. I was scared I was getting too attached to them.

With each passing day the cold got worse. Ginger, Buddy and Shadow refused to sleep on the bed without a warm blanket spread out over the bedcovers!! The heating was almost always on, all windows and doors shut tight against the chilling blustery weather. And I couldn’t for one moment forget those poor little pups out there.

Slowly, they began disappearing. Were they dead? No, they couldn’t have been. I realised it was the healthiest and friendliest of them all that were disappearing. Also the ones with uncommon colouring. They were getting adopted!

P1080229

P1080235

Soon I discovered the mother had jumped over the wall and taken shelter near a roadside tea and snacks stall with a large bunch of puppies in tow. The prettiest of them were nowhere to be seen so I assured myself someone had indeed taken them home.

But in that large pit in one corner of the park, four little puppies survived the harshest of winter days. Now about two months old, they were the cutest things imaginable on earth.

Jumbo was the smartest, cuddliest and bravest of them all. Right from his early puppyhood, P kept drawing my attention to him. He was somehow different.

P1080446

Rather unfazed by Ginger’s inquisitive sniffing, Buddy’s silly antics of rolling over and Shadow’s menacing growling, Jumbo would bound eager over to P and offer his tummy to be rubbed. Once that was achieved, he’d insist on climbing up P’s legs checking whatever he assumed needed checking. He’d play chase till his tiny little paws got tired and finally would insist on seeing us all off till the main gate of the park where our car would usually remain parked.

My heart just broke as I watched him and his siblings forlornly sitting there on the sidewalk as we drove away. I would keep worrying if they were safe till the next evening when I brought them their food.

Yes, I just couldn’t help but start feeding them again. Often I’d find them frolicking around in the sun – the winter was slowly making way for spring and every morning as the sun rose bright and early, I’d be grateful because those puppies would be warm - or huddled together in a heap, probably tired and hungry.

Jumbo was always different. Even as his siblings fell over each other trying to get their fill of whatever was in the two bowls I fed them in, Jumbo would first climb on to my legs, insisting on being picked up and cuddled. He would insist on a belly rub and a meticulous check of the bag I carried.

It was easier for me to walk away without the pups following me on to the main road while they were busy eating. Often I’d run hard so I’d disappear before they realise I was gone. But Jumbo always knew. And then one day, he just sat there and stared while I ran away. While his siblings were busy with their food, he just sat there and kept staring till I disappeared.

I knew he’d realised I’d never take him along however much he insisted on coming with me. He looked so small and so forlorn and yet somehow, he seemed a big boy that day.

I just had to do something to find him a proper home.

Calls, Facebook, e-mails.

A number of responses – ‘Is it a German Shepherd pup? He looks like a German Shepherd in that photograph.’ ‘Is he potty-trained?’ ‘No, actually we are looking for pure-breds. Since you were talking about adoption we thought you might have pure-bred pups as well!!’

And then one family wanted two puppies. They had a big house and a garden and were looking for puppies for their kids. I was elated. Anxious, sceptical but elated.

A lady who works with a registered shelter had very kindly forwarded me a form to be signed by anyone who adopts our mixed breed pups. Amongst other things, the most significant was an undertaking never to abandon the pup or use it for breeding.

Armed and ready, I brought Jumbo home. A visit to Ginger, Buddy and Shadow’s vet. My little boy was in perfect health. Vaccinated, de-wormed, cleaned and dressed up, Jumbo was ready for his new home.

The family never came.

Obviously I couldn’t let Jumbo go back to the park.

A quick introduction. Wagging tails, sniffing noses, bit of growling. ‘Yes, we know you’, my kids seemed to say.

‘How’s it that you’re here? Surely you don’t plan to stay?’

Buddy, after the initial excitement soon got busy in his own world but Ginger clamped up and Shadow seemed seriously upset again.

It was clear the little pup will have to sleep on it’s own. A hearty meal, a quick walk and he rolled up into a bundle of brown fur deeply asleep in his makeshift bed in front of the heater in the farthest room in our house. Many checks throughout the night and early next morning. Not a peep out of him. It was like he was sleeping off his weariness from the past two months.

I decided to call in sick. There was no way I could have left the four of them together in the house un-attended. Besides, obviously the pup would need to go out many a times for ‘his business’.

And of course, I needed to urgently find him a home.

Jumbo turned out to be a miracle pup! In the couple of days that he stayed with us, he never once pooped or peed inside! He’d actually sit down and resolutely howl,’ TAKE ME OUT’!

pup boy4

And once outside, he’d take his time to find a spot he likes almost like a fully grown dog with full bladder control. He was just too good to be true!

But he was very much true. A real wagging, jumping, nibbling, happy adorable little pup and even Heavens do not know how much I wanted to keep him for myself!

They say if you want something extremely ardently and wish for it with all your heart and might it actually comes true. And then I remembered Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

‘Only one who wants to find the stone but not use it for his own end can find it.’

I certainly wanted the best of the families for jumbo whether he stayed with us or not.

A family in our own apartment complex, P reminded me was looking to adopt a dog. A family with two teenage boys. They were quite eager about Ginger, Buddy and Shadow and would often ask how to go about adopting a dog.

No harm asking, I thought.

And last Sunday afternoon, Jumbo finally left for his forever home!

A shy teenager, staccato speech, a smile here and a nod there by way of conversation, Jumbo’s new brother however did not hesitate one moment to scoop him up into his arms.

‘I’ll buy him a new bed’, he told me when I offered him the pillows Jumbo was using.

I’ve met him twice since then and last evening when I called to remind about the next vaccination date, they told me he’s doing just fine.

Jumbo is home.

Friday Flowers

My little experiments with my new DSLR, a Nikon D3100, is proving rather rewarding. Of late, though ,I haven’t been doing much outdoor photography. Too cold to stay still outside for long!! And believe me, the basic trick behind getting a brilliant shot is to learn to stay still. With or without the tripod. And the patience to click the same frame over and over and over again till you get it right!

It isn’t about how expensive, fancy or ‘Just out latest research based edition’ your equipment is. When I had set out to buy my equipment a friend warned me, ‘ Don’t go by what’s currently the newest model. Decide what you want from it.’ I realised I wanted to experiment with compositions, mostly the play of light and shade and colours. There’ll hardly be many instances when I’d go for high speed photography or sports photography. And of course, my equipment is so loaded with features already that it will be a real challenge to actually explore it to the max.

So in spite of comments like ‘ D3100 is by now an old model’ I am quite happy…..

This composition is from the garden in our apartment complex. I remember the day I had taken this shot. It was early winter. We in Delhi who go through a harsh summer wait eagerly for the very distinctive signs that it’s time now to take out our warm woollens. The pleasant sun, the early morning chill, the fuzzy warm afternoons and the seasonal winter flowers. All these before the fog and chill sets in and we can’t wait for spring to come!!

This was one of our early winter flowers. I had probably taken at least 20 shots before I settled on this. Not that it’s perfect. Just that by then my knees were aching and my back was sprained from leaning at impossible angles!!! And even the pleasant chill gets to your bones after you’re out there crouching over a flower bed for nearly three quarters of an hour!!

I imagine this picture is a fit enough subject for TINA’S meme Weekend flowers # 83.
